Classical Music in the Alhambra 2013

For over 50 years Granada has been host to one of the most prestigious music festivals in Europe. Renowned for the beauty of its settings, it makes extensive use of the Alhambra, the city's landmark monument. The Festival's success is also due to an imaginative direction and the commitment of performers of world-class calibre. The balmy nights of early July are perfect for the open-air concerts, held in the Moorish and Castilian palaces and gardens of the Alhambra; the sound of cicadas and the scent of jasmine and myrtle providing an evocative backdrop to some outstanding music and dance. Tickets for this Festival are some of the most elusive in Europe and this year we are organising a three night visit with three performances, staying in Granada.

Our tour includes guided visits of Granada, including the Albaicin district (a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its unique blend of Moorish and Castillian architectre and influence), the Sacromonte, the one-tme gypsy quarter with its cave houses and, of course, an expert-guided visit of the Alhambra Palaces, the most magnificent mediaeval Islamic monument in western Europe.

Hotel: We stay in the 4-star Hotel Villa Oniria which is located in the city centre of Granada, just 5 minutes' walk to the cathedral. It provides a luxurious place to unwind, in traditional Andalucian palatial architecture, with its spacious rooms set over two floors, and a refined decoration and studied ambiance. There is a small and well-appointed garden, full of aromatic plants, leading onto a beautiful inner patio, and a fine restaurant.

Day 1Fly to Malaga where you will be met on arrival and taken by private coach to your hotel in Granada. In the late afternoon there will be a short orientation tour of Granada before dinner in a local restaurant. Tonight's performance will be in the Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra, a magnificent setting for classical music..

Day 2 This morning there is a guided tour of the Sacromonte, the gypsy quarter of Granada and then the Albaicin district, a hilly maze of cobbled strets and alleys with superb views across the city to the Alhambra and the Sierra Nevada mountains. There will be free time before tonight's performance in the Alhambra, this time in the open-air auditorium of the Generalife gardens.

Day 3 This morning there is a guided visit to the Alhambra and Generalife. Free time until the third Festival performance in the Palace of Charles V.

Day 4 Depart Granada by private coach for Malaga where wi visit the Picasso Museum and stroll in the precinct of the Cathedral before lunch in a local restaurant and the short transfer to the airport for afternoon flights.

Note: Travel to Malaga is not included. There are flights from London and regional airports.
