Le nozze di Figaro, one of Mozart’s most popular operas is a new production from the 2012 main season. Rusalka is Dvořák’s quintessentially Bohemian take on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Little Mermaid. It is one of his finest and most enduringly popular operas. As usual, this is an opportunity for gifted young singers and conductors to display their talents in first class productions in the wonderful Glyndebourne opera house.
The countryside of East Sussex will be at its autumnal best as will the gardens at Glyndebourne. We stay at the beautifully restored Pelham House Hotel in Lewes, the county town of East Sussex, which has a long history, much of which is still evident in the town. Lewes has always had a strong sense of independence. Here Simon de Montfort defeated Henry III in 1264 and Tom Paine, who was active in the American and French Revolutions, made his first attempt at swaying political opinion with his pamphlet on the rights of Customs Officers. There is a room devoted to him in the hotel.
The Pelham House Hotel, centrally located in Lewes. Pelham House is a 16th-century Town House with gardens which overlook the South Downs. It has been sympathetically restored to create a stylish interior that combines elegance and history. The restaurant, where we have one dinner, is one of the oldest rooms in the building with beautiful wood panelling.
