OPERA HOLIDAY

BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2017

David Harris, the Artistic Director and his team will be building on the success of 2015, to maintain and improve the high standards for 2017. The aim for the Competition is to help promote a singer or singers who are on the first rung of a singing career. The geographical selection has now been abolished and more countries are included and more singers can come from each country. At the same time there is a deliberate attempt to include singers with different styles and characteristics, each one of whom could be a winner.  This worked very well in 2015 and added greatly to the interest of each heat. This year, Isabel Murphy, the Artistic Administrator of the Welsh National Opera, and a member of the team will talk and discuss the selection process with our group on Friday morning.

It is a privilege to be a member of the live audience sharing the experience with critics, managers, agents and the Jury. For many competitors this will be their first experience of singing with an orchestra and such a large and discriminating audience, some of whom have attended all the contests since it began in 1983 with a win for Karita Mattila.  The reaction of the audience is a critical part of the performance, which is more clearly differentiated in the live than the transmitted. You will hear exactly the same sound as the Jury, who will attend more to technique in the Song prize, but in the main prize the quality of the voice may well be the deciding factor.

The Master Classes are invariably sold out. Members of the Jury give the benefit of their experience to some of the non-finalists. Because their teachers usually only have a specialist skill in some aspect of opera performance, the exposure to the experience of successful performers can have miraculous effects.

We have the best seats for all performances in St David's Hall and your choice of seating at the Roayl Welsh School of Drama and Music. We are also immensely lucky to have rooms at the Park Plaza in Cardiff.
